Laurel sounded distraught on the phone. Van had no experience with kids but she’d always admired the way her friend had eased into motherhood. With the long hours her partner worked, most of the day-to-day parenting fell on Laurel. She was the one who had to make the tough decisions, and then Maddie was able to turn up and smooth things over. Laurel’s feeling that she was failing with Taylor had been growing ever since the girl hit puberty.

“I didn’t mean to lash out at the damn cat, Van. But it scratched me. Now both Mads and Tay think I’m some kind of monster.”

“Is Stevie all right?” Van knew that this would be what hurt Jamie most. Their date the night before had ended too early as far as she was concerned. Jamie hadn’t wanted to miss the last train back to Hebden Bridge because of Stevie. And then she’d got caught up in this family drama.

“Yes. Maddie’s been round to apologise. I asked her to invite Jamie over for dinner but she said she’s too busy this week. So it looks like I’ve screwed up that friendship as well.”

“Maybe she really is busy.” Van hoped that was the case. So far her texts to Jamie had gone unanswered. “She told me she’s getting a car and going house hunting at the weekend.”

“She told us that weeks ago. So, she’s actually doing it?”

“Yes. She’s lined up a couple of viewings for Saturday.”

“Okay. Well, if you’re talking to her, please let her know I’m sorry about jumping to conclusions and kicking the cat.”

“Will do.”

After she ended the call, Van wondered if Jamie was still upset by the incident. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t answering her messages. What if Stevie was hurt and she’d had to take him to the vet? She hadn’t met the cat in person yet, but she knew what he meant to Jamie. Damn you, Laurel, she thought. You better not have messed up my chance of getting anywhere with this one. The few times they had spent together she had felt there was something growing between them. Jamie had just given her the briefest of hugs before setting off to catch her train after their dinner together. The feeling of their bodies touching had sent shivers down her spine. Maybe Connor was right. She was obsessing over this woman. She’d thought she was too old to be having wet dreams but now she was waking up in the night, touching herself and finding she was dripping and needing to bring herself to an unsatisfactory but necessary climax before being able to fall back into a troubled sleep.

She wanted to see Jamie again but she didn’t know how to do it without letting her desperation show. Jamie had been badly hurt by her ex and it was understandable that she wasn’t going to rush into anything. Still, she had to do something to move things on. As a Geordie friend was fond of saying, “shy bairns get nowt.” Time to act.
